Welcome to a world of fast cars and crazy drivers – the 2008 AKA Rally is a cross-country drive that is definitely not for the faint of heart.
The AKA Rally began in 2004, and has been bringing auto enthusiasts together to participate in activity that they all enjoy – driving. This year, the Rally is staged to begin in spectacular New York City, and culminate eight days later in the even more fantastic Las Vegas. Participants will be stopping in several major cities along the way, but due to security reasons, these locations have been kept secret to all except the participants themselves.
The 2008 AKA Rally got off to a rocky start, as founder Chris Conner couldn’t generate enough support to fund the endeavor – enough interest has to be generated in advance, or the special events planned along the way cannot be pre-booked. However, thanks to a generous sponsorship from SpeedTV, that includes a 6-episode series to be broadcast in the fall, the AKA Rally was back on its feet and accepting registrations.
To date, the list of participants includes everything from Porsches to Ferarris, Ducatti’s to DeLoreans, which should make for an interesting rally as they caravan down highways and city streets. Although speed is never the name of the game, AKA Rally organizers are quick to point out that no prizes are given for those who arrive at the checkpoints first, it isn’t uncommon to see local and state Police cruising the area on high alert. “It’s unfortunately not that uncommon for a rallyist to be pulled over by the Police because of another, non-rallyist driver phoning in a complaint,” said former AKA Rally participant David Moffitt “Your average driver sees a group of nice cars, all done up in vinyl and driving together, and assumes they must be up to something illegal.”
Since participation in a rally, such as the AKA Rally, is all about awareness while driving, it was natural for Radars for Rent to become a sponsor. “We hope that by providing radar detectors to the 2008 AKA Rally teams, we can help them make informed and safe driving decisions for the duration of the rally,” said Radars for Rent owner Cassandra Rife. “We’re excited to see these drivers have this opportunity, and even more excited to see it highlighted on SpeedTV this year!”
